Subject: Cajons---Help wanted From: bubblyrat Date: 01 Nov 09 - 01:34 PM I am considering the purchase of a cajon,and would value any comments,based on personal experience,from other "'Catters" : I have,so far,looked at one make from Spain,and two from Germany,and am torn between the idea of a "two-in-one" cajon,ie one with two playing surfaces,(one with snares and the other without), or a single-purpose snared cajon with " add-on" bits like the "Heck Stick" and "Side Kick". Any thoughts ?? |

I'm wondering if it's "box," as in a geographical feature such as "box canyon." Anyway, it's nice to see it pointed out that "cajones" is not the Mexican slang word for "balls." I kind of cringe and roll my eyes when I (too often) see "gringos" spell it that way or clearly pronounce it "Cah - ho- nayz." |

Start a thread about playing, and they will jump in with word analysis, fart jokes or debates over origins. (The origins can usually never be pinned down.) Do you notice that nobody acknowledged my post which shows what a cajon is? That apparently nobody cared enough to take a look at the instrument? Nobody had the least curiosity about the West African concert, either. You have to learn to ignore those distractions if you want to talk music. |

Important points: 1) cut a circle in the back panel so you can put a microphone in it. 2) Fit a HINGE to the front panel so you can open it and tape different things to it. The front panel shouldn't be thicker than 6mm. For example, I tape copper rods to the front panel to make it sound like a snare drum. |

I have also bought the add on's which you mentioned but haven't tried them out yet. Knock on Wood are selling a build yourself kit cajon for a very good price but I don't know what they sound like. It sounded quite effective mixed through the PA. ..that guy had a keen 'drummers' sense of rhythm.. but in the wrong hands a loudly amplified cajon would sound as terrifyingly shit as room full of hyperactive 3 year olds let loose on a box load of shakey eggs... |

I've thought about it - I could easily make one - but for now have decided not to go for it. They're not very portable, and I carry a lot of instruments around already. A Middle Eastern frame drum with jingles (like my Kurdish daf) provides a similar range of sounds, and it's flatter and lighter. The good thing about the cajon is that it stimulates the player's imagination in ways that the bodhran doesn't. This is purely a historical/cultural phenomenon and in no way intrinsic to either instrument, but you don't find yourself thinking "oh no not again" when a cajon-shaped box comes into the room. Anybody who's got one probably knows something about Latin American, African, Indian or Middle Eastern rhythms - you can pretty well guarantee that a bodhran owner won't. |

It's probably better ergonomics not to play it when you're sitting on it. I've not seen anyone else do that. He also sometimes played it with brushes. These were the sort of legs he used. He played with Seth Lakeman too (and maybe still does). Don't know if this helps but when he came to TwickFolk not long back (as part of Benji Kirkpatrick's Trio) I asked him which he'd recommend. Without hesitation he said the Schlagwerk 'La Peru'. He'd bought his mail order from Thomann in Germany.
