Subject: Cajons---Help wanted From: bubblyrat Date: 01 Nov 09 - 01:34 PM I am considering the purchase of a cajon, and would value any comments, based on personal experience, from other "'Catters" : I have,so far, looked at one make from Spain, and two from Germany, and am torn between the idea of a "two-in-one" cajon,ie one with two playing surfaces,(one with snares and the other without), or a single-purpose snared cajon with " add-on" bits like the "Heck Stick" and "Side Kick". Any thoughts ?? |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: open mike Date: 01 Nov 09 - 04:41 PM oh i guess there is a spelling difference "O" vs "A" Cojones (Spanish pronunciation: [koˈxones]) is a vulgar Spanish word for testicles, denoting courage; it corresponds to "balls"... i see there also is a place which must be a play on words.. C.O.JONES mexican restaurant and tequila and margarita bar in New haven CT |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: Genie Date: 01 Nov 09 - 08:08 PM I'm told that "El Cajon," as in the California town, means "the box" - not "the chest of drawers and probably not "the crate." I'm wondering if it's "box," as in a geographical feature such as "box canyon." Anyway, it's nice to see it pointed out that "cajones" is not the Mexican slang word for "balls." I kind of cringe and roll my eyes when I (too often) see "gringos" spell it that way or clearly pronounce it "Cah - ho- nayz." |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 02 Nov 09 - 12:13 AM Oh ye of little faith. Bubblyrat is right on the money. See cajons here http://www.nextag.com/meinl-cajon/stores-html Sorry I can't advise on your questions, bubbly, but I can say that went to a concert of West African music where a man sat on a drum and played it with his heels. He was adorable. |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST Date: 02 Nov 09 - 04:21 AM El Cajón is Spanish for "The Drawer", relating to it being surrounded by mountains in a nestled valley. It is located in San Diego County, California. El Cajon - The Big Box Valley and The Corners. (From the history of the city page) http://www.ci.el-cajon.ca.us/about/history.html |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 02 Nov 09 - 10:44 AM There are a lot of people on the Mudcat who would rather talk than make music. Start a thread about playing, and they will jump in with word analysis, fart jokes or debates over origins. (The origins can usually never be pinned down.) Do you notice that nobody acknowledged my post which shows what a cajon is? That apparently nobody cared enough to take a look at the instrument? Nobody had the least curiosity about the West African concert, either. You have to learn to ignore those distractions if you want to talk music. |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: Paco O'Hitler Date: 02 Nov 09 - 10:52 AM Cajon = drawer. Don't buy one MAKE ONE!!! Make it the same height as a chair so you can sit on it. Important points: 1) cut a circle in the back panel so you can put a microphone in it. 2) Fit a HINGE to the front panel so you can open it and tape different things to it. The front panel shouldn't be thicker than 6mm. For example, I tape copper rods to the front panel to make it sound like a snare drum. |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: Genie Date: 02 Nov 09 - 10:55 AM It's possible some people were too lazy to cut and paste your URL, Leeneia. I'll make it easier. Here's what a cajon looks like. |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST,Gary-The Hut People Date: 02 Nov 09 - 11:11 AM I have played a schlagwerk for years now and I am very happy with it.As long as it has a good bottom end any will do. I have also bought the add on's which you mentioned but haven't tried them out yet. Knock on Wood are selling a build yourself kit cajon for a very good price but I don't know what they sound like. Have fun! Cheers Gary |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 02 Nov 09 - 11:13 AM The first one I saw on stage was being played by one of the young guys in Kerfuffle. It sounded quite effective mixed through the PA. ..that guy had a keen 'drummers' sense of rhythm.. but in the wrong hands a loudly amplified cajon would sound as terrifyingly shit as room full of hyperactive 3 year olds let loose on a box load of shakey eggs... |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: Jack Campin Date: 02 Nov 09 - 11:35 AM Historically, the original idea wasn't MAKE one, but FIND one, surely? - a recycled Peruvian packing crate. I've thought about it - I could easily make one - but for now have decided not to go for it. They're not very portable, and I carry a lot of instruments around already. A Middle Eastern frame drum with jingles (like my Kurdish daf) provides a similar range of sounds, and it's flatter and lighter. The good thing about the cajon is that it stimulates the player's imagination in ways that the bodhran doesn't. This is purely a historical/cultural phenomenon and in no way intrinsic to either instrument, but you don't find yourself thinking "oh no not again" when a cajon-shaped box comes into the room. Anybody who's got one probably knows something about Latin American, African, Indian or Middle Eastern rhythms - you can pretty well guarantee that a bodhran owner won't. |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: Desert Dancer Date: 02 Nov 09 - 11:37 AM There's a percussionist in a dance band in Albuquerque, New Mexico, who uses one that he added legs to. It's probably better ergonomics not to play it when you're sitting on it. I've not seen anyone else do that. He also sometimes played it with brushes. These were the sort of legs he used. They're labelled as floor tom legs. ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: GUEST Date: 02 Nov 09 - 09:26 PM Isn't there a way to inflate air into a bullock's ball sack...and tan-preserve it in one piece...intake...like beef jerky? Would it sound more like a boderan...or more like a gourd? Somewhere in the wide world of music this MUST have been done! And it a neck and a string were attached? |

Subject: RE: Cajons---Help wanted From: TwickFolk Date: 03 Nov 09 - 11:45 AM Cormac from Uiscedwr is by dome way the best cajon player I've ever seen. He played with Seth Lakeman too (and maybe still does). Don't know if this helps but when he came to TwickFolk not long back (as part of Benji Kirkpatrick's Trio) I asked him which he'd recommend. Without hesitation he said the Schlagwerk 'La Peru'. He'd bought his mail order from Thomann in Germany. There's loads of YouTube videos featuring Schlagwerk's....here's one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-C4kDV4SMw |
