Subject: RE: Lyr Req: stor mo chroi From: Coyote Breath Date: 15 Mar 02 - 12:45 AM I have it on a CD called "Tears of Stone" with the Chieftans and it is sung by Bonny Raitt on Dobro with Hutch Hutchinson on bass. It is arranged by Paddy Maloney. It is a very beautiful song, whatever it's pedigree. Paddy Maloney calls it 'traditional'. CB |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: stor mo chroi From: GUEST,Declan Date: 15 Mar 02 - 03:53 AM The song is associated with the singing of Rita & Sarah Keane from Couty Galway (Aunts of Dolores & Sean Keane) and also (my favourite version with Mick Flynn from Miltown Malbay and his wife Jane. Recorded on his CD "A singers dozen" released a couple of years back.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: stor mo chroi From: Paddy Plastique Date: 15 Mar 02 - 04:22 AM A beautiful recent version is Iarla Ó Líonáird's from the 'Aislingí Ceol/Music of Dreams' album he shares with Tony MacMahon et al. There's also a version on a sean nós compilation from Cló Iar-Chonnachta - 'Grand Airs of Connemara' (I think) where I can't quite remember who does it possibly Seán ac'Donncha. Very fine song alright. |

Subject: Lyr Add: A STOR MO CHROI From: GUEST,JTT Date: 15 Mar 02 - 06:29 AM The version I know is slightly different. Listen, by the way, to the lovely singing of The Voice Squad, for a nice version of this. I particularly like the use of the old "throng and list" cliche, which is almost Arthurian. Here's the version I know: A STOR MO CHROI
A stor mo chroi, when you're far away |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: stor mo chroi From: GUEST,JTT Date: 15 Mar 02 - 11:05 AM Sorry, that should be "turn, a stor", and "the ones that you've left behind you", not the one. |

Subject: a stor mo chroi From: bill kennedy Date: 12 Apr 02 - 03:44 PM this is the version in DT:
A STOR MO CHROI
A Stor Mo Chroi, when you're far away
A Stor Mo Chroi, in the stranger's land
A Stor Mo Chroi, when the evening's mist
line 4 of stanza 2 should read 'paling' not 'pailing'
AND I SING IT THIS WAY:
A Stor Mo Chroi, when you're far away
A Stor Mo Chroi, in the stranger's land
A Stor Mo Chroi, when the evening's mist what think ye? Do I blaspheme or is it not maybe a bit better this way? |
